The sector consists of around 40 companies totaling around 1,000 people - mainly in Auckland and Wellington. Everyone knows the large paint companies which are household names such as Resene, Benjamin Moore, Wattyl, and Dulux, but did you know that in addition to house applications, specialised coatings are formulated for marine and industrial use, road markings and a large number of other applications.
House paints are known as architectural products whereas paints designed for protective applications are known as industrial. The approximate manufacturing ratios between architectural and industrial are 20:1 in favour of architectural.
Architectural paint manufacturers also often produce polyeurethanes, resins and adhesives. Typically a manufacturer will either produce water-borne or solvent based products, but it will rarely accommodate both processes. A significant portion of paint is also imported to New Zealand from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The skills needed in the paints, inks, resins, and adhesives manufacturing industries are similar to those elsewhere in manufacturing with the addition of chemistry which is needed in their formulation.
