Moderation is the system that ensures that learning and assessment materials, and workplace assessors are assessing to a consistent and national standard.
There are three types of moderation undertaken by PaMPITO.
1. Pre-assessment
Moderation pre-assessment is where PaMPITO checks assessment materials prior to them being used to assess against a unit standard. This check is undertaken prior to industry trainees and apprentices’ seeing the information and the purpose of the check is to ensure that the materials prepared are consistent with the unit standard.
Every provider, workplace assessor and materials designer is required to submit copies of learning materials and assessments to PaMPITO for pre-assessment moderation. This process is currently undertaken by the National Moderator.
2. Check Moderation
Many PaMPITO assessments are carried out by workplace assessors with on-the-job assessments. These assessments rely on attestations from the workplace assessors that they have seen and gathered evidence on the competencies required for assessment.
Check moderation occurs when a regional moderator observes a workplace assessor conducting an assessment with a trainee. It is a ‘sample’ of the assessor’s assessments. It is also an opportunity to promote best practice in assessment and to ensure that the evidence gathered and the way the evidence is gathered is consistent with the standard. Records of check moderation are kept on each workplace assessors file at PaMPITO.
3. Post-assessment Moderation
Each completed workplace assessment and samples of PaMPITO units assessed by providers are returned to PaMPITO. PaMPITO conducts one final check for consistency with these assessment documents. We look at similar assessments undertaken by different workplace assessors and providers and check that the assessor/tutor judgements are consistent right across the country. If any inconsistencies are found the workplace assessors and providers will be notified.
