Literacy and Numeracy

At the heart of all work skills are the “Literacy and Numeracy” skills that we all need to carry out our job effectively.

“Workplace Literacy” is not just about reading and writing. It is the term used to describe all the underpinning skills people need to complete their work effectively.

These skills include:

  1. speaking and listening effectively
  2. communicating clearly
  3. interpersonal skills
  4. thinking critically about tasks
  5. considering consequences of actions
  6. using computer technology effectively
  7. analysing information
  8. following written instructions
  9. writing information so others can use it.

Often we focus on developing the ‘technical skills’ needed for work, and sometimes we overlook the more generic skills we use at work. Yet these skills can make a significant difference to productivity.

Strong links have been made between “Workplace Literacy Skills” and:

  • reducing wastage
  • complying with legislation e.g. OSH
  • achieving consistency in quality
  • being flexible, working across a range of jobs
  • efficiency and working smartly.

Companies are now recognising, therefore, that their staff need the opportunity to develop these skills in conjunction with more technical and more specific skills. PaMPITO can assist you to set up training programmes that address both Workplace Literacy Skills and technical skills at the same time.

We are also ensuring that the development of Workplace Literacy Skills is embedded into our systems for training and developing skill for industry.
